Demolition
Taipei Metro says more commuters are riding the MRT ... after a major demolition project began at the Gongguan Traffic Circle — the city's top traffic accident hotspot for seven straight years.
On the first workday since demolition and underpass filling began, the MRT recorded about 11 hundred more riders this morning compared to earlier in September, with roughly 17 thousand passengers qualifying for fare rebates.
The road project — aimed at converting the dangerous roundabout into a safer intersection — is expected to be completed in late November.
Officials expect the finished project to cut traffic accidents by as much as 60 percent.
To ease congestion during construction, Taipei Metro is offering a 30 percent cashback on fares during rush hour for trips starting or ending between Wanlong (萬隆) and Xindian (新店) stations.
The rebates can be collected the following month at station kiosks.
