The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) has accused China of deliberately distorting World War II-era documents—including the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation—in an effort to legitimize its sovereignty claims over Taiwan.
An AIT spokesperson told media that Beijing’s interpretation is incorrect, and that these documents did not determine Taiwan’s final political status.
The spokesperson said China’s legal narrative is part of a broader campaign to isolate Taiwan from the international community and pressure other countries to limit engagement with Taipei.
The remarks come after Taiwan was excluded from this year’s Pacific Islands Forum in the Solomon Islands, along with other dialogue partners like the U.S. and China.
AIT expressed disappointment over Taiwan’s exclusion and reaffirmed support for its participation, citing a 1992 Forum consensus that all partners, including Taiwan, should be invited regardless of the host country.
