Hong Kong lawmakers have voted down a bill that would have recognized same-sex partnerships.
The decision is a major setback for the Chinese city's LGBTQ movement.
The bill, introduced in July, faced strong opposition despite the top court in 2023 ruling in favor of the government creating a framework for such recognition.
The proposal aimed to allow residents who already formed overseas unions to register locally, granting rights in medical and after-death matters.
Many advocates criticized its limited scope but some still rallied for its passage.
It is unclear what the government's next steps would be after the vote.
