The Ministry of Health and Welfare is drafting new strategies next year to help the country's growing number of senior citizens who live alone.
The ministry says the new plan will likely expand the scope of services to include all senior citizens who live alone, regardless of their financial status.
It says many elderly people who are financially stable and healthy may still lose social connections as they get older, which can be dangerous in an emergency.
In fact, the ministry sasy a recent estimate found that about 700-thousand elderly people in Taiwan live alone.
Officials say its 2026 strategy will focus on finding a way to stay in contact with these individuals to provide a safety net, and ensure that senior citizens who live alone do not feel lonely.
