Chunghwa Post suspends small parcel services to US due to tariffs

Chunghwa Post has announced that it's suspending the shipment of small parcels to the United States from today due to the expiration of a tariff exemption.
The post office said it will stop accepting all express mail service packages, international parcel posts, ePackets, international registered small packages, and international ordinary small packages under its service provisions....and regardless of what the packages contain.
The suspension was initiated in response to the U-S government's announcement that the so-called "Duty-Free de minimis Treatment" will expire on August 29.
The policy originally exempted customs duties on US-bound mailed items, including goods, that were valued at 800 U-S dollars or below.
The suspension means mail carriers are required to remit duties to U-S Customs and Border Protection - and only when that happens, will packages be cleared for the United States Postal Service for subsequent delivery.
Chunghwa Post says customs duties will have to be first collected from senders of the parcels and it has no way to collect those duties from senders in advance or have carriers help pay the duties first.
