MOI: Chinese nationals will need to pledge to give up Chinese citizenship
Posted on 2025-08-04 17:40:13
to get Taiwan residency

The Interior Ministry says, has completed regulations clarifying that Chinese
nationals applying for residency in Taiwan must submit a notarized
certificate proving that have not applied for or have given up their Chinese
citizenship.

They also must turn in a notarized certificate proving the loss of their
Chinese household registration.

That's part of one of 17 measures promoted by President Lai Ching Te to
address national security concerns.

Specifically, the policy outlines reviewing and managing applications for
Chinese nationals seeking residency in Taiwan.

These individuals are not able to hold dual citizenship between Taiwan and
China.

Previously, the ministry announced that those who held Chinese nationality
previously would need to submit documents to the central government
indicating that they had renounced it.

Ministry officials say they are now taking public opinion into account and
will decide when to begin implementing the new policy soon.
