Furloughs are on the rise in Taiwan, driven by growing concerns over a new 20 percent tariff from the United States on Taiwanese goods.
Since the Trump Administration announced its sweeping tariffs back in April, there’s been an uptick in the number of affected businesses and workers.
According to the Ministry of Labor, 66 companies—impacting more than 1,700 workers—have placed employees on furlough specifically in response to the proposed U-S tariff.
Labor officials say they’re closely monitoring the situation, especially reports of reduced work hours.
Authorities have been conducting site visits and say they’re prepared to offer timely support to affected workers.
They emphasize that the U-S tariff rate is still temporary and remains open to further negotiation.
In total, 190 companies across Taiwan are currently implementing reduced shifts due to general economic impacts, affecting over 3,400 employees.
