The opposition KMT is urging President Lai Ching-te to hold a national conference after the U-S confirmed a 20 percent tariff on Taiwanese exports starting August 7th.
KMT Chief Convener Fu Kun-chi called the tariff a serious blow to Taiwan's export-driven industries, warning they now face steeper competition from Japan and South Korea, which enjoy lower rates, at 15 percent each.
Mayors from four KMT-led municipalities echoed the call, accusing the government of failing to secure fair treatment in trade talks.
Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen warned of economic ripple effects...
While Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an said the outcome contradicts earlier government assurances that Taiwan's tariffs "would not be higher than those of competing countries".
Meanwhile, the Taiwan People’s Party criticized the government’s negotiations as lacking transparency and demanded a full explanation from President Lai.
The ruling DPP insists talks with the U-S are ongoing and is urging unity as Taiwan faces this economic challenge.
