The Ministry of National Defense plans to purchase some 50,000 drones over the next two years as part of efforts to boost its asymmetric warfare capabilities.
The information was disclosed in a tender notice posted on the Government e-Procurement System.
The note says the Armaments Bureau aims to acquire a total of 48,750 drones in two phases - 11,270 in 2026 and 37,480 in 2027.
The drones fall into five categories - marked Type A-Type E - and include multi-rotor vertical take-off and landing and fixed-wing models, with maximum flight times ranging from 7 minutes to 2 1/2 hours.
According to the tender notice, the drones will be sourced domestically and must not contain any components made in China.
The notice also stresses that companies with Chinese capital or links to China are banned from bidding
The Armaments Bureau says all drone assembly and component manufacturing must take place in Taiwan, and priority should be given to locally made parts.
