Taiwan's Vice Trade Representative Yan Hui-xin (顏慧欣) says Taiwan and the United States both recognize that progress has been made toward a trade deal and have tentatively agreed on the next round of consultations.
Yan also says while Taiwan has yet to receive a letter regarding tariffs from the White House, receiving it does not indicate final tariff rates.
She says many countries are awaiting talks with the U.S. with the aim of reaching a consensus by August 1st, the deadline set by President Donald Trump.
Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-qi also stresses that negotiations are still ongoing and has declined to speculate on final rates.
He notes that the process involves “give and take”, and that Taiwan is negotiating in good faith.
Yan and Chen made the comments when answering questions at the Legislative Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.
Asked about Taiwan's bottomline in the negotiations, Yan says it lies in safeguarding national and industrial interests, food security, and public health.
