Taiwanese Tourism Faces Steep Drop Amid Earthquake Rumors

Japan was the top destination for Taiwanese travelers in the first quarter, accounting for 36% of outbound trips.
According to the Tourism Administration, from January to April, there were 6 million overseas trips, with Korea coming in as the second most popular destination.
Taiwan also saw nearly 3 million inbound arrivals during the same period—mostly from Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong and Macau.
But travel agencies say business has slumped in July, hit by rumors of a major earthquake.
Some report it’s the worst July in 35 years.
Tourism officials say that as a result, the usual summer airfare hike—typically between NT$3,000 and NT$5,000—has not materialized.
