Heathrow Blackout Caused by Seven-Year-Old Negligence

An inquiry has found that a fire that shut down Heathrow Airport in March was
caused by a preventable fault identified nearly seven years earlier.

The blaze at one of three power substations halted operations for 18 hours,
disrupting travel for over 200 thousand passengers.

The National Energy System Operator said elevated moisture was detected in
oil samples at the site in 2018, but faulty insulators were never replaced.

Moisture later triggered a short circuit in a transformer, igniting the oil
and sparking the March 20 fire.
