The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed and is welcoming the transit of
the British Royal Navy vessel, H-M-S Spey through the Taiwan Strait.

The foreign ministry says the transit reaffirms the Strait's status as
international waters... and that these movements not only safeguard the peace
and stability in the Taiwan Strait they also promote a free and open
Indo-Pacific.

The transit took place after the U-S and the U-K held a joint patrol
operation in the East China Sea earlier this month.

The British Office in Taipei has confirmed that the vessel "conducted a
navigation of the Taiwan Strait" on Wednesday.

They added that navigation was conducted in accordance with the rights
provided under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea - citing
precedent for Royal Navy vessels to operate in the region.
