Japan’s ispace Aims for Historic Moon Landing
Posted on 2025-06-05 13:14:13
Japanese startup ispace is set to attempt a controlled moon landing tomorrow,
hoping to become the first non-U.S. company to do so.

The mission comes two years after its first attempt crashed due to a software
error.

The new lander, named Resilience, launched in January and is now orbiting the
moon.

It carries a rover and scientific gear worth 16 million U.S. dollars.

The landing is scheduled for 4:17 a.m. Japan time on Mare Frigoris, near the
moon’s north pole.

If successful, ispace will transfer moon material to NASA, marking the
world’s first commercial lunar resource deal.

The mission is part of Japan’s growing role in lunar exploration, which
includes future plans with NASA’s Artemis program.
