In news from and about Taiwan this morning,
President Lai Ching-te has marked the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre by underscoring what he says is the importance of defending democracy and freedom.
Taking to social media, Lai said as authoritarian regimes erase history, democracies "have a duty" to preserve it.
Lai criticized China without naming it ...
.. and also warned that 36 years on, the threat of authoritarianism by military intimidation, gray-zone coercion, surveillance or extraterritorial repression remains a global challenge to democratic societies.
The president went on to say that Taiwan stands on the frontlines of defending democratic values worldwide - and stressed the island will continue working with like-minded partners to "safeguard the status quo" and protect democracy and freedom.
