The Presidential Office is stressing that U-S President Donald Trump's comment on "unification" was referring to trade talks between America and China and not about Taiwan.
According to office spokeswoman Karen Kuo, the U-S' commitment to Taiwan remains strong and unchanged.
The statement comes after Trump praised an agreement was reached with China to slash steep tariffs for at least 90 days.
Speaking to to reporters at the White House, Trump said "they've agreed to open China, fully open China, and I think it's going to be fantastic for China, I think it's going to be fantastic for us, and I think it's going to be great for unification and peace."
The American Institute in Taiwan has issued a statement regarding Trump's use of the word "unification."
A-I-T said it was clear that "Trump was speaking in the context of the US-China trade relationship" and "U-S policy on Taiwan remains the same, and the U-S approach to Taiwan has remained consistent across decades and administrations."
While the White House National Security Council has also reiterated that Trump "was clearly referring to US.-China trade relations."
