The National Science and Technology Council has announced that's selected Jiupeng Village in Pingtung's Manjhou Township as the location for Taiwan's national space mission launch site.
According to the council, the decision was made following a comprehensive review conducted by an inter-agency panel, which evaluated environmental conditions, launch conditions, development execution, and potential for further development.
The council says the site was chosen due to its advantages in terms of land acquisition, size, usability and lack of environmentally sensitive areas.
Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi took to Facebook shortly after the announcement to say the decision is "exciting" and he believes Taiwan's "space industry is ready to take off in Pingtung!"
The National Science and Technology Council says the National Launch Site will help promote the space industry and will be integrated with local efforts to boost technology, education and tourism, such as the construction of a space-themed museum.
