Taipei Recall Events Face Stricter Rules Than National Law

Taipei’s recall petition events are facing stricter local rules, even though they don’t fall under the national Assembly and Parade Act.
Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang (劉世芳) today confirmed that recall activities are not covered by the law, but Taipei’s rules, like a 30-thousand NT deposit and a one-week notice, can confuse civic groups.
Some critics say the city is using these rules to block recall groups.
But Taipei police said the stricter steps help prevent public trouble and follow national safety guidelines.
Liu added that police must stay neutral and protect both public safety and people’s right to vote or organize recalls.
