The Nuclear Safety Commission confirms there is no radiation leak and no impact on reactor operations after a fire broke out at the 3rd Nuclear Power Plant in southern Taiwan earlier today.
Taiwan Power Company says the fire was reported at 11:23 a.m. and was fully extinguished by 11:35 a.m.
Taipower says the fire started at two cooling towers about fifty meters from nuclear equipment and did not affect electricity generation.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and officials confirmed there is no safety risk.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The 3rd Nuclear Power Plant, also known as the Maanshan plant is set to shut down its last reactor on May 17 as part of Taiwan’s nuclear phaseout.
The site will be converted into a solar power facility covering fifty-five hectares.
