Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council has rejected the applications of Shanghai officials to come to Taipei and join the Taipei Lantern Festival.
The M-A-C says Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism's officials plan to do sightseeing and explore attractions, activities that should have been negotiated between the two non-government tourism agencies in Taiwan and China.
The M-A-C says proper negotiations through the agencies can protect travelers' best interests and ensure the "healthy and orderly development of tourism across the Taiwan Strait."
The Council also reminds local governments to align with the central government's policies.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has expressed deep regrets about M-A-C's decision as it has broken a long-standing tradition where Shanghai officials would always come to see Taipei's lantern festival.
