President Lai Ching-te says he firmly believes that matters related to public health should not be undermined by cross-party disputes.
During event in Taipei marking World Cancer Day, Lai urged opposition lawmakers to rethink their recent cuts and freezes to heath related budgets ..
.. saying "public heath protection should not be divided along party lines."
Lai said the government had earmarked an additional 4-billion N-T in funding for expanded cancer screening programs, bringing the total to approximately 6.8-billion ..
But 10-per cent of the administrative costs for those programs has been cut, while another 30-per cent has now been frozen due to budget cuts passed by lawmakers on January 22.
The Presidential Office has stressed that the costs Lai was referring to were 592.8-million N-T categorized vaguely as outsourcing expenses used to commission outside parties to conduct research or handle other tasks.
Data shows that a cut of 10-per cent of that figure would amount to a reduction of only 1.43-per cent of the total additional funding requested.
