President Lai Ching-te is calling for public support for the death penalty, saying the Constitutional Court has found that it does not violate the Constitution.
The President has also extended his condolences to the victims' families, acknowledging that they "had endured years of hardship."
He made the comments after the Justice Ministry last night executed death row inmate Huang Lin-kai.
Justice Minister Zheng Ming-qian (鄭銘謙) says Huang's crimes were among the most severe, aligning with the Constitutional Court's directive for the strictest judicial review procedures.
Zheng stresses that his Ministry handled this execution in accordance with the law to uphold justice, and that there were no special considerations or predetermined positions.
Meanwhile the ruling DPP says it fully supports the government's decision to carry out the execution based on the law and the Constitutional Court's ruling.
