The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Taiwan's representative office in South Africa is operating as usual..
..following the South African government's decision to withdraw a relocation deadline.
The initial deadline had required Taiwan's office to relocate from Pretoria, the country's administrative capital, by October 30th.
However, the deadline was rescinded after concerted efforts by Taiwan's representative office, support from embassies of like-minded democratic nations in South Africa, and backing from local political figures.
Reporters speculated that the move to enforce the relocation may have been influenced by pressure from Chinese authorities.
A high-ranking Chinese Communist Party official visited South Africa in early November, coinciding with this sensitive period.
MOFA suggested the timing of the visit was likely aimed at encouraging the South African government to push for the relocation of Taiwan's representative office.
Negotiations between Taiwan and South Africa are ongoing.
