The Coast Guard Administration has rescued all 17 crew members from a China-registered cargo ship after the captain abandoned the vessel, which had lost its ability to navigate due to severe weather and heavy loading.
The "Yu Zhou Qi Hang" is said to have left Keelung for Zhangzhou in southeastern China's Fujian Province before it stalled under unusual conditions 2.4-nautical miles north-northwest of Cape Yehliu three hours later.
The ship was carrying three gantry cranes and officials say it was affected by strong winds and the outer rim of approaching Typhoon Kong-rey.
The vessel was unable to leave the area and gradually drifted closer to the shore near Yehliu.
The Coast Guard Administration attempted to send tugboats to the scene, but were forced to return to port due to rough seas.
