Defense Minister Wellington Koo says a Chinese blockade around Taiwan could be characterised as an "act of aggression" and if that were to happen, Taiwan's military would respond with a wartime deployment.
Koo told lawmakers that a blockade was defined as such under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3314.
And a result, if Chinese blockade were to occur, it would have deep implications for the world... particularly since the Taiwan Strait is a critical transport route for the international community.
Under those conditions, Koo told lawmakers that Taiwan's armed forces would begin wartime deployments and tap into the country's "defense resiliency" if China chose to take such action.
Prior to the hearing, Koo told reporters that 20-per cent of the value of global trade transported by sea goes through the Taiwan Strait, and if there were a blockade, the international community would "definitely" have to respond.
