Keelung Mayor Remains in Office after Recall Vote Fails

Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang will remain in office after a majority of voters rejected his recall in a public vote.
According to the Keelung City Election Commission, 55.16-per cent of valid votes were in favor of him remaining in office - while 44.85-per cent of the same backed his recall.
Those figure mean that not only did a majority of voters reject the recall, the number of ballots in favor of Hsieh stepping down from office failed to meet the required 25-per cent threshold of 77,700 ballots.
Hsieh will now continue to serve as Keelung mayor of and cannot face another recall vote for the remainder of his term in office.
The final result is still pending certification by the Central Election Commission.
The commission has said it will release its tally of votes and make a formal announcments as to the ballot's outcome this Friday at the latest.
