MAC Says Cross-Strait Same-Sex Marriages Can be Registered in Taiwan
Posted on 2024-09-20 06:57:13
The Mainland Affairs Council has announced that cross-strait same-sex couples
married in a third country can now register their marriage in Taiwan.

Council spokesperson Liang Wen-jie says same-sex cross-strait couples can now
follow the same regulations applied to heterosexual cross-strait couples
married in a third country... when registering their marriage here.

Liang says after passing an interview with the relevant authorities, the
same-sex couple can proceed with marriage registration at a household
registration office in Taiwan.

However, the couples are required to have their marriage certificate issued
in a third country authenticated by a Taiwan overseas representative
office... before the interview is conducted by the authorities.

The Mainland Affairs Council has clarifies that a third country refers to one
that recognizes same-sex marriages.

Gender rights groups are welcoming the move, but say it essentially forces
all cross-strait same-sex couples to detour to a third country to get
married, leaving them to face "higher economic and social barriers" compared
to heterosexual couples."
