U.S. House passes act to strengthen ties with Taiwan, Pacific Islands

The backers of the Pacific Partnership Act say the act aims to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan and the Pacific Islands Forum.
It was passed unanimously by the United States House of Representatives on Monday, after having been introduced earlier this year.
It emphasizes the importance of U.S. collaboration with key allies and partners, including Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Taiwan, as well as regional organizations like the PIF.
Unlike other recent bills, such as the Taiwan Conflict Deterrence Act, it doesn't explicitly target China.
Instead, it directs the U.S. president and secretary of state to address the region's vulnerabilities, including natural disasters, economic coercion, and military threats, as well as streamline U.S. aid programs in the Pacific.
The bill now faces a narrow window for Senate approval, given the approaching U.S. elections and upcoming congressional recess.
