The Cabinet has approved a request by the Ministry of National Defense for the manufacture of seven domestically built submarines.
The submarines will be based on the "Narwhal" prototype, which ceremonially launched in September of last year.
Cabinet spokesperson Chen Shih-kai says Premier Cho Jung-tai signed off on the plan to build seven submarines from next year through 2038 at an estimated cost of 284-billion N-T.
The 13-year plan will be part of the Indigenous Defense Submarine program under which the "Narwhal" prototype was developed.
Approvel for the submarines comes as the Cabinet has OKed a defense of 647-billion N-T for 2025.
The defense ministry says that total budget will include 2-billion N-T for the submarines.
