A Chinese man who drove a speedboat near the mouth of the Tamsui Tiver in June has been indicted for illegally entering Taiwan.
According to the indictment, the man is suspected of having violated immigration laws, as he had no entry permits.
The suspect claimed he was fleeing China in pursuit of democracy and took the risk of going to Taiwan to seek asylum, as he was barred from leaving China for making unfavorable remarks.
Taiwan authorities deemed the man a potential national security threat, due to his background as a former Chinese naval officer and Communist Party member.
But an investigation found no evidence to suggest he was a threat.
Under the Immigration Act, those who enter Taiwan without permission are subject to jail terms of up to five years and/or a fine of up to 500 thousand NT.
Prosecutors didn't recommend a sentence for the suspect.
