The Mainland Affairs Council says a diplomat meant to be posted to Taiwan's representative office in Macao was not able to get a visa... because the official refused to sign an affidavit recognizing Beijing's "One China" principle.
Council spokesman Liang Wen-chieh says the foreign ministry official was originally meant to fill a vacancy at the the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Macao.
The position opened up after a previous diplomat returned in late July after over a decade of service.
Liang said Taipei cannot accept the requirement that the new appointment must sign an affidavit adhering to the "One China" principle.
That document has been required of Taiwan officials working at the representative office since 2019.
Prior to that, staff posted to Macao had been able to stay in the territory by extending their original visas.
