Taiwan and China Reach Settlement over Kinmen Speedboat Incident
Posted on 2024-07-31 08:15:13
In news from and about Taiwan this morning,

Representatives from Taiwan and China have reached a settlement regarding the
February 14 incident that left two Chinese nationals dead after their
speedboat attempted to evade a Coast Guard Administration patrol boat in
waters near Kinmen.

Speaking after a one-hour talks at the Golden Lake Hotel in Kinmen,
administration director-general Hsieh Qing-qin said the agreement will be
actively implemented.

However, Hsieh went on to say that he's "currently unable to disclose"
details of the deal, "out of respect for the families involved and the
consensus reached in the cross-strait agreement."

The top Chinese representative at the talks also confirmed an agreement had
been reached.

With Li Zhao-hui - who serves as the deputy director of the Taiwan, Hong Kong
and Macao Affairs Office in Quanzhou City - saying he now hopes the "relevant
parties in Taiwan" will honor the agreement and provide a resolution for the
families.

Officials representing the two sides held several rounds of talks in February
and March but failed to reach an agreement on matters relating to the case,
including how to compensate the families of the two men killed in the
incident.
