Hsinchu Mayor Gao Hong-An To Be Suspended After Guilty Verdict

Hsinchu Mayor Kao Hong-an (高虹安) has been found guilty of corruption, and
will be suspended from office.

The Taipei District Court passed down the ruling this morning...

...over charges that Kao embezzled funds meant for her assistants during her
time as a lawmaker.

Kao has been sentenced to 7 years and 4 months in prison and will be deprived
of her civil rights for 4 years.

The Ministry of the Interior will suspend Kao from her mayoral position under
the Local Government Act.

Vice Mayor Qiu Chen-yuan (邱臣遠) is expected to act as the interim mayor.

The ruling can be appealed.

Meanwhile, Hsinchu Prosecutors are still investigating seperate corruption
charges concerning Kao's luxury apartment and vehicle...

...with allegations that these were provided by a developer in exchange for
preferential treatment.
