Yesterday's decision halts the enforcement of the amendments...

...passed in May amid a partisan battle which saw fistfighting between
lawmakers...

...and mass protests outside the legislature.

Opposition parties say the amendments to the Law Governing the Legislative
Yuan's Power...

...are aimed at strengthening the lawmaking body's power to oversee the
executive branch's power.

However, the ruling DPP caucus, the Cabinet, President Lai, and the Control
Yuan each sought an injunction...

...saying the revisions might be unconstitutional.

They also petitioned the Constitutional Court to rule on the
constitutionality of the amendments.

The ruling yesterday suggests that some of them will eventually be found to
have violated the Constitution.

The opposition Kuomintang caucus disagreed with the ruling and described it
as "the death of judicial independence".
