Taiwan has signed an 11.25 billion NT contract with the United States to acquire infrared search and track (IRST) systems for its F-16V fighter jets.
The contract was signed between Taiwan's Defense Mission to the USA and the American Institute in Taiwan.
These I-R-S-T systems, part of an arms package announced on August 23 last year will be installed on Taiwan's fleet of 66 F-16V jets stationed at Zhi-Hang Air Base in Taitung County.
The new-generation I-R-S-T systems are designed to enhance the F-16V's target acquisition, tracking capabilities, and overall air combat performance.
A scholar from the Institute for National Defense and Security Research said the I-R-S-Ts could be effectively deployed against China's fifth-generation fighters.
