High Court Revokes Cheng Wen-tsan's Bail for a Second Time

In news from and about Taiwan this morning ...
The High Court has once again overturned a ruling by the Taoyuan District Court granting bail to former vice premier Cheng Wen-tsan - who is at the center of an ongoing corruption and money laundering investigation.
The latest High Court ruling comes after the district court on Tuesday rejected a second appeal by prosecutors for a detention order.
The district court instead increased his bail from 5-million to 12-million N-T, banned Cheng from leaving the country and set limits on his movements.
Prosecutors appealed that ruling immediately after the the bail hearing.
The High Court says it chose to revoke the second bail ruling as there remain several unanswered questions as to why the district court is continuing to allow Cheng to remain free on bail.
According to the High Court, the district court overlooked the possibility of collusion between Cheng and other witnesses, as well as Cheng's substantial influence in the city government.
And the High Court is arguing that such collusion is still likely as several other suspects in the case have been released or granted bail after being questioned by prosecutors.
The Taoyuan District Court is now set to meet again at 2 o'clock this afternoon for the third bail hearing.
