They sought approval from the court to detain him and prohibit him from
contact with other people...

...amid fears over collusion in testimonies.

Local media report the case concerns a project involving a land use purpose
change during his term as Taoyuan mayor.

Responding through his lawyer, Cheng said he was innocent, and willing to
cooperate in the investigation.

Spokespeople from the Straits Exchange Foundation and the Presidential Office
voiced respect for the investigation process.

Before he became SEF chairman in June, Cheng served as Taiwan's vice
premier...

...and before that he was Mayor of Taoyuan from 2014 to 2022.
