In news from and about Taiwan this morning,
The Coast Guard Administration is linking China's seizure of a Taiwan fishing boat illegally operating in its territorial waters to its new regulation authorizing the Chinese coast guard to seize boats in waters it claims.
According to administration Deputy Director-General Xie Qing-qin, Beijing has stepped up harassment of foreign vessels since June and the harassment has increased not just in terms of the number of incidents, but also in terms of force used.
Beijing initiated China Coast Guard Regulation No. 3 on June 15 ..
... and it allows the coast guard personnel to board and hold vessels in disputed waters it claims and to question and detain foreign nationals found to have violated its "exit and entry rules" for up to 60 days.
The Coast Guard Administration deputy director-general is warning Taiwan-registered fishing boats and other ships that pass through nearby waters to be wary, while also stressing that his agency will step up efforts to escort Taiwanese fishing vessels.
