Efforts to Stall Legislative Reform Fail
Posted on 2024-06-21 15:08:14
A DPP efforts to overturn parliamentary reforms has failed in the Legislature.
The controversial amendments were first passed on May 28th...
...and would expand the powers of the legislature to conduct investigations.
However the Executive Yuan argued that the expanded powers would violate the
Constitution...
...and last week sent the amendments back to the legislature for
reconsideration.
Today the motion to overturning the amendment was rejected with 51 votes in
favor and 62 against.
The votes against included the KMT's 52 lawmakers, two independents aligned
with the party...
...and eight lawmakers with the Taiwan People's Party.
Afterwards, the DPP held a press conference...
...where caucus leader Ker Chien-ming expressed determination and optimism.
Ker criticized the KMT and the TPP, accusing them of standing against public
opinion and the constitution.
The Executive Yuan and the DPP caucus both said they would seek a ruling from
the Constitutional Court...
...on the constitutionality of the amendments after the passed bills are
announced by the president.
Ker also said the caucus would file a motion for "a preliminary ruling"...
...to keep the laws from being implemented before a final ruling is made.
