New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi says a new Linkou light railway is on the table, but ridership will be a key factor in deciding when to build it.
His remarks were a response to D-P-P councilors, who raised concerns over the increasing population in Linkou and other nearby areas, stressing the need for effective traffic solutions.
Hou emphasized the necessity of long-term transportation planning due to Lin Kou's growing population, which has nearly doubled to 130 thousand in the past eight years.
The mayor said he has discussed the light rail project with former and current Taoyuan mayors, adding the proposed route will likely be elevated or underground to avoid traffic congestion.
Taoyuan MRT officials noted that T-PASS has boosted ridership of the Airport MRT, and an upcoming review in late July will determine if the Linkou Light Rail project meets the ridership criteria for priority promotion.
