Investigations Underway in Fire and Deaths of Two Firefighters

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of a fire at Hsinchu City apartment complex.
The blaze resulted in the deaths of two firefighters and saw hundreds of people trapped in the four-building complex.
The fire broke out at 11PM on Sunday, and was brought under control about 30 minutes later.
However, over 100 people were trapped in the building for hours due to dense smoke in the stairwells.
The last of the 351 residents were evacuated at around 1:10PM in Monday.
The complex is made up of four 28-story buildings and the Hsinchu City Fire Bureau was forced to assist residents on higher floors leave the building with the use of an aerial ladder.
Several people, including children were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
According to the fire bureau, the two firefighters entered the building on arriving at the scene and began evacuating residents.
They re-entered the building and were taking the stairs to the third and eighth floor when they discovered their oxygen was insufficient.
They were discovered collapsed on the third-floor staircase and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
