Hualien Earthquake: Collapse of Uranus Building

Meanwhile...

In Hualien City, the devastating earthquake resulted in the tragic collapse
of the Uranus Building, claiming the life of a teacher.

Early inspections by the Hualien District Prosecutors Office and structural
engineers revealed the building as a "soft-leg" construction, lacking
essential pillar support leading to its downfall.

Originating from 40 years ago, such buildings were common due to lenient
construction regulations of the past.

The Uranus Building, a nine-story structure built in 1986, housed 79 units
and had previously suffered damage in the 2018 earthquake but was deemed
restored until this recent seismic event.

Investigations are underway to assess the structural integrity and compliance
with construction regulations to pinpoint the collapse's cause, as
authorities delve into the building's maintenance and modification records
for potential oversight.
