Three Have Consumed Red Yeast Rice Capsules Purchased in Japan

The Ministry of Health and Welfare says three people in Taiwan have consumed
health supplements linked to deaths in Japan.

The ministry says the three people purchased red yeast rice capsules produced
by Kobayashi Pharmaceuticals while in Japan, and took the supplements
regularly for a number of months.

One reported experiencing no discomfort, while another suffered acute kidney
injury, and other related symptoms.

Taiwan has not imported any of the problematic capsules, but two Taiwan
companies have imported red yeast rice ingredients from Kobayashi
Pharmaceuticals.

The companies have initiated a voluntary recall of their products.

As of yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration has received 240 items that
contain the problematic ingredients.
