Eluanbi Lighthouse Elevated to National Monument Status

The Ministry of Culture has designated the Eluanbi Lighthouse, with a history of 141 years, as a national monument.
This recognition aims to highlight the Hengchun Peninsula's significant events in the late 19th century and Pingtung's role in Taiwan's international engagement.
Standing just over 21 meters tall with a light visible from 20 nautical miles, the lighthouse is known as "The Light of East Asia."
It exemplifies the prefabricated architectural methods of the 19th century, with parts manufactured in Britain and assembled on-site.
Originally built following maritime incidents in the late Qing Dynasty, including the 1867 "Rover" shipwreck and the 1871 Mudan Incident, the lighthouse's construction was part of Taiwan's opening to international trade.
Today, it not only serves as a navigation aid but also as a testament to Taiwan's rich historical and cultural heritage.
