National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen says his office
believes it is currently too "dangerous" for President Tsai Ing-wen to visit
Taiping Island.

Tsai has told lawmakers that China is currently very active in the South
China Sea, with sea and air patrols hailing non-Chinese shipping and aircraft
transiting through disputed area.

The National Security Bureau director says defense and security agencies
would need to rigorously assess whether the president's plane would encounter
any aviation or security related issues during the 1,600-kilometer flight ...

... and as such he would not recommend a presidential visit to Taiping Island
at this time.

The National Security Bureau director-general also stressed that current
geopolitical situation in the South China Sea mean that if the president
chose to visit Taiping Island...

...such a move could be viewed as an intentional escalation of regional
tensions.
