Legislative Yuan Approves Indigenous Status Act Amendment
Posted on 2023-12-18 15:10:13
The Legislative Yuan has today passed an Amendment to the Status Act For Indigenous Peoples.
This significant step, announced by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, aims to reinforce the rights of indigenous peoples to identity recognition and equality.
The amendment addresses two key issues: First, it allows indigenous individuals who have voluntarily renounced their status to reclaim it once.
Secondly, it simplifies the process for those with indigenous ancestry who were adopted by non-indigenous people, enabling them to claim their indigenous status without terminating the adoption.
It also allows them to take a traditional indigenous name if they meet certain criteria.
This legislation marks a progressive step in protecting and recognizing the rights and identities of Taiwan's indigenous population.
