Former chief of the general staff, Admiral Liu Ho-qian has died.
He was 97.
The Ministry of National Defense is not giving any details of Liu's death, but says it will help his family with funeral arrangements.
Liu was a four-star admiral and served as commander of the R-O-C Navy from 1983 to 1988.
He was promoted to the chief of the general staff in 1991 and serced in that post until 1995.
He was also appointed as military strategy advisor to presidents Lee Teng-hui, Chen Shui-bian, Ma Ying-jeou and Tsai Ing-wen.
Defense officials say Liu played a crucial role in the development of the Taiwan's Navy and helped in the purchase of two Hai Lung-class submarines from the Netherlands in the in the 1980s.
