Offshore wind farms in Taiwan may soon be farms for something else.
The Ministry of Agriculture says it has successfully cultivated several types of large seaweed species with economic value on the island's offshore wind farm area, which may be used for food, as well as improve water quality, and create living environments for sealife.
Officials point out that the seaweed attracts fish and in turn, increases fishery resources, allowing for potential future cooperation between private wind power companies and local fishermen.
The ministry says if approximately 5-percent of current wind farm areas are used as seaweed farms as well, that could lead to an increase of up to 26-thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide captured and stored
