Activists Slam Police for Church Arrest of Migrant Worker

Labor and human rights advocates are accusing the New Taipei City Police Department of engaging in "reckless" behavior that disregarded people's right to religion.
The statement comes after police entered the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Shulin District late last month in pursuit of migrant workers.
Police the past weekend said three individuals entered the church after officers tried to question them on suspicion they were members of a fraud ring - and while one was arrested in a stairwell, the other two got away.
Police have now confirmed they arrested a Vietnamese migrant worker who had left his employer, but who had nothing to do with a fraud ring.
According to the director of the Vietnamese Migrant and Immigrant Office of the Catholic Church's Hsinchu Diocese, he the incident occured while he was giving a sermon and without informing the church or gaining permission to enter the building.
Peter Nguyen Van Hung is describing the police action as "reckless" behavior that disregarded people's right to religion and he's calling National Human Rights Commission and the National Police Agency to publicly denounce the office's actions.
