The Chinese Unification Promotion Party has hosted a banquet in Taipei for suspected members of an Okinawan-based organized crime syndicate.
The event comes after party founder Chang An-lo invited the alleged yakuza members to Taiwan as part of his efforts to drum-up support for the pro-unificationist party ahead of next January's elections.
However, reports have also said Chang invited the alleged members of the Japanese mod to Taiwan due to their close ties to Taiwan's Bamboo Union organized crime gang, of which Chang is a former leader.
The Taipei City Police Department says it deployed 83 officers to the restaurant in the city's Songshan District to monitor the banquet and question those attending the event.
According to the police department, the identities of 162 people entering the venue were checked for warrants and other possible outstanding infractions.
